Volunteer Spotlight: Emily
Transitioning to civilian life can be tumultuous and challenging for veterans and their spouses. However, with the support of dedicated professionals like Emily Ellis, who has been championing our clients since 2016, this journey becomes much smoother. Emily's guidance helps clients confidently navigate their path to success.
Emily has a successful career in HR and a passion for helping people. She has made an incredible difference for many Hire Heroes USA clients as she coaches them to master the job-search process, from resume writing to interviewing.
Emily recalls when she first joined our volunteer team:
“As a talent engagement specialist at AMS, a resource planning organization, one of our clients was looking to hire veterans. I wanted to educate their stakeholders and advocate for service members. But I needed to learn more about these dedicated individuals.”
Emily reached out to a friend and colleague Emily Gomez, a Hire Heroes USA program manager. The two women had worked together as career advisors at University of North Carolina. For Emily, it was a win-win: she gained a deeper understanding of the unique skills and experiences veterans bring to the workforce, while also empowering them with valuable insights from her decade-long experience as a career advisor for university business students and a recruiter for various corporations.
“Sharing with service members what prospective employers are looking for, I strive to empower veterans to better position themselves as strong candidates. I show them how to boost their skills and prepare for compelling interviews.”
A key aspect of Emily's coaching is advising her clients to research targeted companies and industries. This preparation helps them excel in interviews and negotiate fair, competitive offers. Emily feels immensely rewarded when Hire Heroes USA clients share their successes with her, whether they've secured a job or advanced in their careers using her advice. She recalls one client who transitioned from an HR role in the Army to a civilian position:
“This experience was especially meaningful because she was looking for a role in my field, allowing me to provide more in-depth guidance and support. I was privileged to follow her successful journey, coaching her through all facets of the job search including navigating job offers.”
Emily enjoys staying connected with her clients and following their successful career journeys. She finds it incredibly rewarding to be part of their successes and to celebrate their achievements alongside them. Emily’s encouraging words to prospective volunteers speaks volumes about her gratitude for getting involved with our organization:
“Volunteering with Hire Heroes USA rewards both volunteers and veterans. It’s a great way to show your appreciation for their sacrifice and resilience. Even if you have a limited schedule, it’s convenient to contribute while being rewarded each time your clients have achieved success.”
