Bio Medical Equipment Technology Apprenticeship (BMET)

Howard Community College’s (HCC) BMET Apprenticeship Program creates a pathway for both aspiring and current professionals to excel in the medical industry. BMETs install, maintain, and repair medical equipment and devices used in clinical environments, including hospitals, clinicals, and other locations where patient care is administered. Over a period of three and a half years, apprentices learn how to test, adjust, monitor, and repair medical equipment, with focus on optimizing operational efficiency to assure patient care can be provided safely. This is accomplished through completion of 46 course credits and 6,000 hours of paid, on-the-job learning, taking place in partnership with healthcare employers across the state of Maryland. Graduates of this program earn an associate of applied science degree. HCC is the only college in Maryland that offers a program of this kind. Click here to learn more.

Information Technology Apprenticeship (IT)

HCC's IT Apprenticeship Program is facilitated in partnership with the AT&T’s public sector organization. Once accepted in to the program, apprentices interview for placement into one of four entry-level roles at AT&T: IT Field Support Specialist, which supports equipment installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance needs; Network Field Support Specialist, with concentration on testing existing networks for functionality and security; Information Systems Security Engineer, which develops and recommends mitigation strategies; or Linux System Administrator, which updates software and ensures proper security protocols are performed on computers using the Linux platform. IT apprenticeships are completed over a course of three to four years and include up to 4,000 hours of paid field experience. In tandem, apprentices work to earn security clearance, with AT&T as their sponsor, and are eligible or full-time employment at AT&T thereafter. Click here to learn more.

Software Development Apprenticeship

Over a period of two years, software development apprentices complete a series of both credit and non-credit courses at HCC, while pursuing 3,000 hours of paid field work in tandem, through the college’s partnership with NewWave Technologies. Apprentices are hired to serve as software developers, who apply computer science and coding skills to design or modify software and applications; computer system engineers, who facilitate workflows between developers, engineers, and clients; and data warehousing specialists, who develop data storage and processing solutions, and analyze and extract data to support data warehousing. By graduation, apprentices will have also earned at least two Microsoft Certified Professional Certifications for MS Azure. Click here to learn more.
